The US navy posses a wide range of defense equipment to serve the country in the best possible manner. Amidst various other equipments possessed by the navy, it is the submarines that are the most significant. This is primarily because submarines are one of the most technologically advanced machines possessed by the navy.
A lot of research and development has gone into making US navy submarines. They are equipped with the best of computer technology, nuclear power and sound quieting that makes them the best in the business. Besides, being equipped with the best features, the US navy submarines are also huge. Typically, the size of a US submarine is about 300 feet in length and 30 feet in breadth. US navy submarines can be broadly divided into two categories i.e. attack submarines and ballistic missile submarines. Amidst the two, it is attack submarines that are meant to seek out and attack the enemies. They also carry cruise missiles that have high explosive warheads. Besides, they are also used for intelligence and surveillance missions. The average size of an attack submarine is 362 ft. X 33 ft. When submerged in water, these submarines displace about 7,200 tons of water. The Ballistic missile submarines, on the other hand are meant to carry long range nuclear warhead missiles. A single submarine is known to carry 24 trident ballistic missiles. They roam in the ocean, while avoiding any kind of contact with ships and other submarines. These submarines primarily belong to the Ohio class. These submarines are larger than the attack submarines. The Ballistic missile submarines displace 18,750 tons when submerged. Typically, the ballistic missiles are 560 feet long. Both attack submarines and ballistic missile submarines are used to perform a wide range of missions. One of the most important missions performed by both submarines is sea control. These submarines are used to prevent the entry of any kind of hostile forces in the sea. They are also used for anti submarine warfare and anti surface warfare. They detect and destroy any hostile submarines or surface ships that may be a threat to the security of the nation. Further on, US navy submarines are also used for strategic deterrence, which refers to launching retaliation attacks whenever any country attacks the US. Landing special operation forces, search and rescue, intelligence, surveillance, battle group support, mine warfare and transportation are some other important functions performed by the US navy submarines. Considering the numerous functions performed by US navy submarines, it will not be untrue to tag them as indispensable for the US navy. This is primarily why a large sum is spend on the maintenance of these submarines each year. The US navy submarines are truly and integral part of the US navy. Related Articles
