Unlike the navy that serves as an important defense force, the merchant navy primarily deals with the transportation of cargo. Passenger vessels, carriers, tankers and cargo liners comprise the Merchant navy fleet. Of course, these marine vehicles are not as exotic or luxurious as cruises but offer you a more than just comfortable voyage. Gone are the days, when a career in the merchant navy was just restricted to men. Over the past few years, a large number of women too have joined the merchant navy. If you wish to join the merchant navy then you have primarily two main ranks to choose from- radio officers and marine engineers. Radio officers is yet another rank that you can join, but this rank is primarily joined by women officers. The best part about looking for a career in merchant navy is that it offers you ample number of options to choose from. Jobs in the merchant navy can be primarily divided into three different categories i.e. the engine, deck and the saloon department. If you wish to be on the deck, then you can join any of the following ranks- junior office, second officer, thirds officer, captain and chief officer. For the engineering department, you can join ranks like the chief engineer, electrical engineer, fourth engineer, second engineer and third engineer. Besides, you also have the option of joining other services such as the kitchen, laundry and the like. Typically, merchant navy officers are employed by shipping companies. The recruitment usually takes place on a contractual basis. Most merchant navy officers are hired on a contract basis. The contract period, usually varies from anywhere between six to nine months. Of course, a career in the merchant navy is absolutely lucrative. But, there are several downsides to the same as well. The career is not cake walk and requires a great deal of hard work. Besides, the job profile requires you to stay away from your home and family for several months at a stretch. So, if you are not prepared for that, you might consider other career options.
